Great for smoothies

I bought this blender to replace an aging Magic Bullet blender, and the difference is phenomenal. This blender has over triple the power (700 watts) and blends ice and frozen fruits with ease. The pitcher is large enough for making big smoothies - the glass pitcher holds 40 ounces (5 cups).First of all (and most importantly! haha), it looks fantastic sitting on my counter. A very nice looking appliance.Secondly, the price was right. I shopped around for a lot of blenders and this was one of the cheapest with all the features I wanted.It couldn't be easier to make a quick smoothie - I add frozen fruits, whole ice cubes, protein powder and Silk and it makes a great smoothie at the press of a button. First it pulses the mixture to break down the large chunks, then it slowly revs up to full speed to make the mix smooth. There's a good little vortex that forms while it's blending and you can see all the ingredients getting well-mixed. I haven't found big chunks at the bottom of my smoothies yet - and this is something that happened all the time with the Magic Bullet.The lid is nice - it snaps on tight so there is no need to hold it while blending, and it has a clear snap lid that you can open to add more liquid or ingredients. I tried pouring my smoothies out of this lid and that didn't work too well - I think I like my smoothies much too thick for that!Cleaning it has been really easy so far - I just rinse the lid and pitcher with hot water after making a smoothie and it's ready to go for the next time. Every week or two I stick the pitcher and lid in the dishwasher for a thorough cleaning.When searching for a blender I read a lot of reviews here on Amazon, and some brands/models mentioned a "burning smell" when using the appliance. I'm happy to report that the Hamilton Beach Smoothie Smart does NOT smell like it's burning when you use it - which is probably a good thing. :)All in all, I am very happy with this blender and would highly recommend it!

If all you want is a smoothie...

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RO7TGWZA6P876 Some people might be looking to this as an alternative to expensive blenders like the vitamix or blendtec for raw food smoothies. Here is a full blender cycle with a greens/fruit smoothie. As shown it was still a bit chunky at the end and needed another full cycle. So 2 total cycles makes a nice smooth drinkable greens/fruit shake. The ingredients were fairly typical of a raw food smoothie:3 leaves purple kale, 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, 6 strawberries, 1 banana, 1/2 avocado, 1 small handful pumpkin seeds, 2 spoons chia seeds, 1 spoon maca powder, 2 spoons hemp protein, 1 pint glass orange juice, 1/2 pint glass water and 5 small ice cubes.Speeds are also limited compared to a normal blender. That's ok though as it's stated purpose is to make smoothies. If you just want something cheap for that purpose this is a good way to go assuming reliability is ok. I'll update if there is anything to report in that respect.*****UPDATE*****Only a couple of weeks in and the lid has started to leak when pouring through the spout. I'll have to take the lid off and pour from the glass container from now on. You get what you pay for I guess.

A+ Amazing Smoothies

I will never drink another home-made protein shake unless I've used this blender.PROS: It crushes ice!! No left over pieces (large chunks) what so ever. The consistency of the smoothies makes this worth ever penny. The motor is very strong and it shows.Cons: A bit loud but I can over look it to be able to drink great shakes.-----UPDATE Aug 13, 2012-----So I've been using the blender everyday to make what its designed for, making protein-shakes. I add ice + bananas + protein powder + water and it worked great... for about a month.This morning without warning the motor gave out. No fizzle or smoke just decided to die upon initiation of blend cycle.The only reason I left this as 3 stars is because (1) when it worked the smoothies were amazing and (2) Hamilton Beach replaced it without hesitation. GRADE A CUSTOMER SERVICE on their part.
